45 million pledged to improve A2 interchanges near Bluewater

Ebbsfleet Development Corporation is investing 45 million in a 125 million scheme to improve road capacity around the A2 near Bluewater Shopping Centre.

The current interchange at Bean, Kent

The new scheme will help accommodate future growth at Ebbsfleet, smooth traffic through the junctions and improve journey times, as well as provide better facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and horses.

Works due to start in 2019 will enlarge two roundabouts at Ebbsfleet, as well as the roundabout at Bean interchange situated next to the shopping centre and install traffic lights. In addition, a new bridge over the A2 will provide a slip road on to the busy route.

Interim Chief Executive of the Ebbsfleet Development Corporation, Paul Spooner, said: “This is a major commitment by us to ensure the A2 continues to move. With up to 15,000 new homes in Ebbsfleet Garden City, we are well aware of the strain that could place on local traffic, particularly at these two junctions, and this money enables that work to now go ahead.”

The additional funding has been welcomed by developers currently working in the area, with managing director of Redrow Homes (South East), Chris Lilley, commenting: “This forward investment into the A2 will provide various improvements all geared towards alleviating what is a very busy route. It’s a major commitment to  ensuring local residents can enjoy better travel by road as well as rail as the Garden City develops.”

Redrow is currently building 950 homes at Ebbsfleet Green.
